Get FREE information about Rental Cars and Collision Waivers. Why you should accept the additional coverage. Log on to www.TheInsuranceCenter.us for complete details.

Frank: One of the big questions we always get that people want to know is when I rent a car, do I need to buy the collision waiver, the insurance that the car company is offering. And Kevin’s going to tell us about that.

Kevin: Well, that’s a question that everybody likes to ask because when you’re there, you always hear the spiel from the kid behind the counter, and they make it sound like this wonderful product. People always want to know, should I pay for that? Should I pay that daily charge, which has increased significantly over the years.

Frank: what, about $15 to $20 a day?

Kevin: Oh, it can range from $15, and I’ve seen it as high as $30 a day. The reason why purchasing that warranty — because it’s not an insurance product, it’s a warranty product — from the rental agency is a good idea is because when you sign that contract when you rent the car, you’re taking a lot of liability on yourself that you may or may not realize. And part of that liability is you’re guaranteeing the rental agency if something happens to that car, you’re going to take responsibility for it. Now, if you damage the car in an accident, you may be able to file a claim against your current auto insurance company, and they may help you pay for it depending on what type of auto insurance you have. But other reasons why you may want to buy the waiver is because if you damage the rental car, you can call the rental agency, you can call the 800-number, they’ll come and get the car. Some of them will bring you another one. You don’t have to make a claim against your auto insurance. You don’t have to pay a deductible, which you will have to pay if there’s a claim against your auto insurance. Some deductibles can be as high a $1,000 depending on the damage. You can relieve that responsibility, and it will also cover the rental agency’s loss of income from them not being able to rent that car for a week or for two weeks or for longer because they can’t put it on the road because you broke it. So, for people who ask, should I buy this? If you have auto insurance, there’s a good chance your insurance company might pay to fix the damage to that rented car. What most of them will not pay for is any loss of income to the rental agency, which can be substantial. You’re going to have to pay a deductible, which is an out-of-pocket expense to you, and it’s going to be a claim against your auto insurance policy, which means your auto insurance might get more expensive or even non-renewed. So, when you’re thinking whether or not it’s a good deal, if you remember those factors, it might help you make the decision.

Frank: We had a guy, he rented a car in Alaska, and he brought it back, parked it, put the keys in the thing. About four months later, he gets a letter that says, hey, you wrecked our car. And he had to go back and forth arguing with them saying, hey , I didn’t wreck your car; who says it didn’t happen I dropped it off? I think he ended up paying a deductible and having his company pay it. But again, they were charging him for days off that he had to pay out of pocket as well.

Kevin: Right, absolutely. And another thing to remember is it all depends on the rental agreement. The details that I can tell you from this desk are what I know from a few examples from national rental agencies, but there’s rental agencies out there that might have agreements that ask for a tremendous amount of information that I haven’t even discussed. So, it’s always a good idea to read the rental agreement. And if there’s any question at all about what coverage you might have under your auto insurance policy for a rented vehicle, you’ll want to give your insurance agent a call.

Frank: Again, give your agent a call, review your policy, and if youd like a second opinion, give us a call at the Insurance Center of Central Florida. Our number is below.

Insurance Center of Central Florida

http://www.theinsurancecenter.us/

Get FREE information about auto insurance rates and why you should shop for auto insurance. Log on to www.TheInsuranceCenter.us for complete details.

Frank: One of the other things I’d like to talk about is why you should shop your auto insurance. A lot of people get with the same company and stay with them for years. They don’t really shop, and I don’t think that’s wise. Even if you read Consumer Reports, they will tell you to shop your rates not in between a direct writer, but go to some of the independent agents as well. There are several things that will affect your rates.

Kevin: Absolutely. Your auto premium can be based on a number of variable factors, anything from the age of the children or the age of the individuals on the auto insurance, the type of car that you drive, crash statistics – national crash statistics can have a huge impact. The geographical region that you live can have a huge impact. And these things are always changing, and several of which are out of your control. It’s always a good idea to have your auto insurance shopped at least every couple of years to make if one of those variable factors have changed, you’re not missing out on some possible premium savings.

Frank: One of the things we do, we have a program that will do five different rates at one time. And what’s amazing to me is that the person sitting across from us has the same risk, but the companies will have rates that typically will vary up to 40%, and I think it really depends on the company who they’re most comfortable insuring. Everybody’s so different anymore that these rates aren’t very consistent. One company might have higher rates, and they’re going to terrible for this customer, and all of a sudden, they’re the lowest. So, it does really pay to shop.

Kevin: Absolutely. And it’s also important to remember that if you have significant changes in your life, if you get married for example, it might be a good idea to shop your auto insurance because one of the partners might have a better driving record than the other, might have a better credit score than the other. There might be an issue there that can help control the pricing of the auto insurance favorably. So, it’s important that your auto insurance agent understands exactly how things are with your situation currently and is able to keep you up to date on any changes in your life or in your area that could have a direct impact on the cost of your auto insurance.

Frank: And especially if you have teenagers. I mean, teenagers are so expensive. And again, the company’s rates deviate so much for teenagers. Some are more inclined to insure them. Some have special programs for them called Teensurance, where they want to insure those teenagers, and they want to help them take courses so they have fewer accidents. So, you do want to shop, especially if you have teenagers.

Kevin: Absolutely, it’s extremely important that you contact your insurance agent, ask them if there’s any possible factors that have happened in your life that could change the pricing of your auto insurance. You may not have had any accidents in quite some time. Contact your insurance agent today and ask them to quote your auto insurance for you and see if maybe some of those changes in your life will have a direct impact on how much you’re paying for your insurance.

Frank: Again, give your agent a call, review your policy, and if youd like a second opinion, give us a call at the Insurance Center of Central Florida. Our number is below.

Can I insure a modified or classic car; who will offer insurance cover?

Yes, you can insure a modified car but because your car is a specialist car, not all auto insurance companies might be willing to provide coverage for it since it requires high price replacement parts and also skilled labor if the car is involved in an accident. Thus, you have to take a special car insurance that is designed especially for modified and classic cars.

How can I cut down my car insurance premium?

If you wish to cut down on your car insurance premium you must take care of a few things. Park your car overnight in the garage rather than leaving it on the drive. Fit insurance approved anti-theft devices; consider Third Party Fire and Theft for older cars. Find out discounts offered by the insurance provider when requesting quotes. Young drivers (under 25), who are often charged extremely high premiums, should have an extra driving course certificate.

What is ‘excess’?

It is the amount you have to pay when you make a claim for the loss or damage to your car. It can be voluntary or compulsory. If someone else causes the accident you may be able to reclaim the excess through the legal cover, which can be taken out with your car insurance policy. Otherwise you lose the excess. Voluntary excess is the amount you agree to pay to the company. It offers premium discounts. Compulsory excess is generally imposed to young drivers. Because their risk factors are high and the companies don’t want to insure them. So, in order to insure, they have to surrender with this payment.

What is legal cover?

It provides expertise and assistance required to recover uninsured losses such as medical costs, loss of earnings and excess payments where the fault was not yours. It is available as an optional with most car insurance policies.

Can an insurance company cancel my auto policy?

Yes, you auto insurance policy may stand canceled if you fail to pay the premium or if your consumer’s license has been suspended or revoked during the term of an auto policy. Also, if there is a fraud or serious misrepresentation when completing the insurance application, if the you are convicted to a crime, or if changes are made to the property that increase the risk of loss then the company may cancel your insurance policy.

Hi – You didn’t say what agency you were from or what affiliations you had, but the easiest way to do this is to use stand alone software where no merchant account or credit card company is involved. This way, after you buy the software, you won’t have monthly fees or per check charges.

Software like CheckWriter software from checkwriter.net allows insurance agents to take checks by phone for the following reasons:

1. Customer wants to call in a payment due today. [expiring auto policy, dwelling fire, life etc.]
2. Customer needs insurance binder for property closing.
3. Payment to write new coverage or rewrite coverage.
4. Monthly payments on existing policy.

Basically, once you get the customer’s check information by phone, fax or through a website, you enter or import it into the software and print a physical draft of the check that you can deposit into the bank the same business day, with no fees.

Because you have a physical item, it is treated just like a check. You can deposit the check, forward it to the insurance provider, or ACA the payment.

All insurance agencies should offer this service, it drastically drops cancellations. You can call and ask for the payment and take it over the phone, or if they call you just take the information. It increases retention and increases new business.

The software is around $100 and there are no annual fees or setup charges and no transaction fees like there are with so many ACH and Check Draft Providers. If you do 1,000 transactions per month, or 2 transactions in a month there are still no fees.

Drafts are printed on Federal Reserve Regulation ‘CC’ Blank Check Stock which would be the only additional expense when using this type of system. A box of 500 would be about $50 and you can get large quantities for 1/2 that price. You can use any laser or ink-jet printer and blank check stock is about 5 to 10 cents per check.

If you are a Farmers Agent, Farmers Agency, State Farm Insurance Agent or Independent Insurance Agent listed on the Independent Insurance Agent’s online finder, you can get special low group rates for the system.

Back in October, the radiator in my car took a total crap. I cancelled my insurance policy, and I’ve been relying on my mom to drive me everywhere. They want 650 to replace it, labor included. Well, today I got a letter in the mail stating that I have 20 days to submit verification of auto insurance or my license will be suspended for 3 months, my car may be impounded and I’ll have to carry high risk insurance for 3 years!!! I absolutely cannot believe this! I have a clean driving record, and I have NEVER driven without insurance. I’ve done absolutely nothing wrong. The letter says to go online to the ohio bmv site for more information, but it was everything listed in the letter, nothing more. It is illigal to drive without insurance, NOT to OWN a BROKEN car with a cancelled POLICY! There seems to be nothing I can do but lose EVERYTHING. There is a hearing you can request, but only to dispute whether or not your vehicle was covered on the specified date. The date listed on my letter is December 20th, 2009. The hearing information states that requesting a hearing will not prevent the consequences of failing to provide proof of insurance coverage on the specified date. What should I do!!!??? I can’t believe all of these horrible things are going to happen to me when I havent violated ANY laws!!!!!
I was under the impression that the paper I signed when I register my vehicle stated that I understand that it is illigal to drive without insurance, and that I agree not to do so. The mailing my plates in makes no sense to me. I’m planning on repairing my car EVENTUALLY. My car is not on the road, its on my property.

For auto insurance the easiest method to get a cheap quote is do a auto policy comparison. Be sure to choose the same coverage amounts, you can get an accurate quote to compare against others. Use the same zipcode, auto make/model, mileage and driving history to ensure you get accurate comparison. To get easy auto insurance quotes, go to http://www.goodonlinedeals.com/Auto-Insurance.html and you can compare the major auto insurance companies.

I have a PA auto policy with Titan Insurance (I’m high risk).
My original ID cards did not list an excluded driver, however, when I misplaced them and printed new ones from the website I found that my mother was listed as an Excluded driver.
(We are household residents.)

From what I understand, you must sign something in order to have an excluded driver. I don’t remember signing anything when I got my policy (8/9/07), which if had it would have reflected on my original ID cards, and did not sign ANYTHING when I renewed (2/9/08).

IF they had ASKED me if I wanted to exclude my mother, I would have told them absolutely not. I have no problem with her driving my vehicle, and it would only hurt me, as she has such a clean driving record and high insurance score.

When I got my dec page for renewal (8/9/08) it listed "EXCLUDED DRIVER SURCHARGE." So they’ve been charging me?

I’ve called my agency and told them I would like to see the form where I excluded my mother.
I guess my question is, if they can’t turn up the paper where I excluded her, and I was charged for the exclusion, what is my recourse?

I write insurance for Titan, and they have some weird rules on their policies. When I quote an auto policy with Titan, it will show me all the members of a household when I put the address in. You and your mother would be listed as licensed household members. On the application, it asks if there are any other licensed drivers in the household, and I’m guessing you said no. If you signed the application stating that no one else was to be covered on your policy, you excluded her.

If I add someone onto my auto insurance policy and that person gets in an accident, will my rate climb. If it does can I remove that person from my policy to keep my rate the same.

Yes, they will likely rise. Most companies will not allow you to delete someone from your policy if they are still living with you, unless they have their OWN auto policy. A few will let you, but only if you "exclude" them from all coverage – pretty risky, as if they DO drive while excluded, the policy is void.
