Yepsen: Senator, talk about — let’s talk about some issues here. Talk about this trade question. Even polls now showing a lot of Republicans are not sure that free trade is working for America. What do you say to those who say it’s been a one-way street?

McCain: I try to present some of the facts to them about the millions of jobs that were created, et cetera, et cetera.

But that’s of no comfort to the worker in Dearborn, where we were just last night, who lost their job, who can’t afford their health insurance, and has no pension, because this is — this is a revolution of monumental propositions. It’s unmatched anything since the industrial revolution, and there are people left behind.

Fifty thousand people today make their living off e-bay. That’s no consolation to the United Auto Workers employee who lost his job and is not going to have their health care, et cetera.

We’ve got to take care of those who are left behind. Then they will be for free trade, including — and I’m no big-government person. But if someone had a high paying job and they’re an older person, 50, 55, about your age, then — then — and they had to take a much lower paying job, a much lower paying job, then why not compensate them for a while so that they cannot experience this traumatic change in lifestyle.

Job training programs and education: none of the federal programs work today. Our community colleges: here in Iowa, where’s the strongest part of education? The community colleges.

Go to the community colleges. Have them design education and training programs and let them give these people another chance. Make health insurance affordable and available. Right now that is the biggest concern in any town hall meeting that I have.

How to minimize car ownership

Lease the car you always wanted………………………….then buy it later.

Pity the automotive industry. Whereas the airlines are hurting
under unsustainable wages and benefits, i.e. health insurance
and pension contributions, they are likely to reduce them both
in coming negotiations, whereas the Automotive industry is
saddled not only with these same problems, but worse, not enough
customers and too many plants worldwide making vehicles.

If China’s car industry enters the United States in three or
four years with the “Cherry” automobile, a talked about vehicle
made in China with Chinese wages, the situation will only get
worse.

Compounding the problem for some of the manufacturers is that
their labor contracts are so juicy that they are better off
continuing to give away cars rather than to close a plant and
pay continuing benefits to laid off employees.

This situation will not change for several years until
consolidation, plant closings, or bankruptcies have cured the
problem. And plant closings will be a last resort. Therefore the
glut of new cars will likely continue for a few years.

And the subsidized lease will continue to be offered.

During that time, new cars will be a real bargain.

Question: How best to minimize long-term car ownership.

Simply put…lease it now, buy it later.

In the past, the auto manufacturers moved cars by subsidizing
leases. Without getting into the math, the monthly lease cost
was lowered by increasing the residual value, thereby selling
(leasing) more cars. But the value of the vehicle at the end of
the lease was almost always less than the contracted residual
and each of the off-lease cars then had to be sold in the
wholesale market at a loss of several thousand dollars.

Hence several of the big backers of lease financing, Chrysler,
some New York banks, and others, each lost several hundred
million dollars in each of the past two or three years because
they had to sell the off-lease cars on the open market for less
than the residual value.

So why lease a car now instead of buying one right now?

Because by initially leasing a car, the maker is essentially
offering a price that can’t be beat. It’s actually lower than
the “employee cost” widely advertised. Then buy the car at the
end of the lease.

At the end of the lease the company financially backing the
lease most likely will sell the car on the open market at a
loss. Why not intervene at that point and buy the car for less
than the residual value and put that “loss” into your pocket as
money saved?

A true-life example:

A business friend of mine had a three-year-old leased car with a
contract residual value of $28,000. Looking at the used car lot
he found he could buy one just like it for $24,000. He assumed
the company that financed the lease would loose at least $2,000
in selling it for less than the contracted residual value.
Through the dealer he offered $22,000 to buy the car as is and
his offer was promptly accepted, including 3%, 3 year financing.
His dealings, all by phone (no face to face negotiations needed)
were with the company financing the lease.

So lease the car of your dreams today if you ultimately want to
buy it. Let the companies financing the lease continue to
subsidize your monthly lease payment. About three months before
the end of the lease, cruise the used car lots and notice what
your car is being offered at and then buy the car (no
commissions paid to anyone on this transaction) at the end of
the lease and keep several thousand smackers in your pocket.

Around 2:00pm Friday, August 7, 2009, my boyfriend (black male) and I were arrested because of supposed identification issues. My boyfriend and I had taken our previous cases to court in June and won. At the same time through a two day trial, I caught the cop (racist cops in AZ. Please do research on Sheriff Joe Arpaio.) doing perjury on the stand (assisted by the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office). And since I filed charges against that cop and I have a hearing this Tuesday for the perjury charges against him, my boyfriend and I have been harassed and pulled-over three times.

The cops supposedly arrested my boyfriend with supposed resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. When in fact, my boyfriend never resisted arrested and it was the cops who were in disorderly conduct since the time before they pulled me over (undercover cop admit following us for at least a mile before the initial two cop cars finally pulled us over ’cause according to them, it was my auto plate in the back of my car window the reason they pulled me over – not against state vehicle codes). And the reasons they harassed my boyfriend (racial profiling) was simply because he did not show them his identification – he was the passenger. Neither my boyfriend nor I were committing, or about to commit, any crimes. And therefore, the cops had no rights or jurisdiction to demand for his identification. My boyfriend was within his legal rights to refuse.

Further, while we were in the transportation vehicle to go to jail, my boyfriend explained that they supposedly found 3 warrants for his arrest. However, the only thing that matched on those warrants was his date of birth – not the first nor last name matched my boyfriend’s name. In addition, the state the cops claimed where my boyfriend had these supposed warrants; he never even visited that state.

I was finally released today on OR but they still have my boyfriend in jail and I’m very concerned for his well-being; he has seizures caused by lack of sleep.

My boyfriends’ mother just explained to me that my boyfriend called her stating he did not get OR (he does not have any priors and he’s employed) and that she posted bail already earlier this morning.

While I was in jail, I did not nor could not sleep. They placed 28 women in a holding cell in the size of a living room; it was very cold, women were cuddling with one another to stay warm, and even using toilet paper as blankets and on the cement floor for warmth – because the guards refused blankets. In addition, they mixed the drug attics, mentally ill, homeless people who may have illnesses, people with criminal history, and people with no criminal history, together. There was also a frail old women at least 70 years of age who claimed that two deputies threw her face down to the ground then kicked her – all because she explained that couldn’t be exposed by the sun because of her seizures and medications. She had a big swollen whelp on her left cheek and above her eye. She was in the holding cell for at least 3 minutes till she finally fainted and hit her head on the toilet seat. It took approximately 10 or minutes before the deputies finally arrived to help her. I finally saw this frail old lady in court today. She had a sling on her arm.

While that is horrible, the men had bad, too! Their rooms were smaller and they were more packed in their holding sells. And I know my boyfriend could not sleep – it was so crowded, most men were sitting – there was no room to lay down. [Reminder: no beds in holding cells.] [ Our meals were only twice a day and we received the exact same meal every day - bread, peanut butter, donut, cookie, orange, and juice - all in a plastic bag. All sugar and not a balanced meal, whatsoever].

The cops also towed my car, confiscated my laptop, camera, cell phone, driver’s license, auto insurance, and auto registration. They also confiscated my boyfriend’s cell phone, over $200.00, etc. Further, they stated that they will not release my car for 30 days . And they withheld our property until we went to their impound. My cell phone, driver’s license, and car has yet been returned!

All against the United States Constitution: Amendment 4 – Search and Seizure.

Currently, I will be going to court first thing Monday morning to subpoena my personal belongings. In addition, I have hearings on August 11, 18, 19, 26. and 28th – all based on the cops harassments. If anyone knows of an attorney who may be willing to help with a 1983 act for my boyfriend and myself, it will be highly appreciated!
