The state of California has closed a loop hole in the law that allowed people to register their cars with phony insurance or to register with good insurance and cancel a short time afterward. Now when you cancel your insurance, the insurance company will notify the DMV electronically and you car’s registration will be revoked? What happens afterward?
You still have the valid looking sticker on your car…so Are
police going to be stopping you now just to check for insurance? How do you get your registration re-instated if revoked under these conditions?
I was asking on yahoo answer so I could get and answer here. Going to the DMV is the alternative. Thanks you very much Superman for your information. You win hand downs. thanks.

1. The department is required to suspend the registration of a vehicle when:
● The registered owner fails to provide evidence of insurance within 30 days after the issuance of a registration card upon initial registration or transfer of ownership.
● DMV is notified that a policy has been cancelled and a replacement policy has not been submitted within 45 days.
● The registration is obtained by providing false evidence of insurance.

2. If the vehicle record does not show current insurance within 30 days of the initial registration or transfer of ownership, or within 45 days of cancellation of insurance, the Vehicle Registration Financial Responsibility Program will send a notice requesting proof of insurance.
If proof of insurance is not received, DMV will suspend the vehicle registration and send a notice informing the vehicle owner that proof of insurance and a $14 reinstatement fee is due to clear the suspension.

3. A peace officer shall not stop a vehicle for the sole purpose of determining whether the vehicle is being driven in violation of CVC § 16028(a), however they may stop a vehicle being driven in violation of CVC § 4000(a).

4. You must submit current evidence of insurance and pay a $14 reinstatement fee.
NOTE: If your vehicle is parked or driven upon California roadways when the registration is suspended, you are subject to citation (CVC §4000a).

They always ask for license, registration, and proof of insurance.

I don’t think they will be stopping random people and asking for insurance information but if you get pulled over for any reason and don’t have valid insurance I’m sure its gonna be a larger fine.

No, they won’t randomly pull anyone over. But if you get stopped for any reason, you must show proof.
